About the Institute for Integrated Systems Thinking

The Institute for Integrated Systems Thinking (IST Institute) is an interdisciplinary research and educational organization dedicated to advancing the Systems Thinking Framework through research, publishing, mentoring, and teaching.

The Institute defines and employs the Integrated Knowledge Approach, a method that draws from multiple disciplines, historical traditions, and practical experiences to better understand complex systems and the events they produce. Rather than treating systems thinking as a rigid methodology limited to one field, the Institute approaches it as a flexible set of principles that can be applied across the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, technology, public health, economics, and organizational studies.

Since the mid-twentieth century, systems thinking has become increasingly important in fields such as engineering, environmental science, management, and health sciences. However, many complex human and social problems continue to resist fragmented or discipline-specific approaches. The IST Institute works to address this challenge by developing clearer definitions, stronger conceptual foundations, and more practical applications for systems thinking across disciplines.

The Institute’s work focuses on:

  • Research and systems analysis;
  • Publishing scholarly and public-facing works through IST Institute Press;
  • Mentoring through talks, seminars, and collaborative initiatives; and
  • Teaching through accredited and non-accredited educational programs.

A central part of the Institute’s mission is to recover and engage intellectual traditions from across history and cultures that may have articulated principles consistent with systems thinking long before the term itself emerged in modern scholarship. By combining historical insight with contemporary analysis, the Institute seeks to build a more coherent, practical, and durable framework for understanding complex systems.

The Institute welcomes collaboration with researchers, educators, professionals, and students from all disciplines who are interested in advancing integrated approaches to knowledge, inquiry, and problem-solving.

How we do it

By offering a diverse range of services by partnering with innovators, creators, educators, and changemakers. Through these collaborations, we co-create solutions that drive progress, spark transformation, and meet the evolving needs of communities and industries in an ever-changing world.

Approach

We believe in the power of systems thinking to drive meaningful and lasting change. That’s why we work closely with individuals and organizations who are best equipped to apply and explain this framework across four critical areas: research, training, mentoring, and dissemination

By integrating deep expertise with collaborative insight, we ensure that knowledge is not only generated—but shared, practiced, and sustained across communities and sectors.

Options

Our guiding principle is simple: we are rarely limited to just two choices. In a world facing complex challenges and a fragile shared ecosystem, we are committed to exploring smarter, more sustainable ways of doing things.

While our core focus is on conceptual systems—communicated through our highly selective publishing programs—we remain open to meaningful collaboration. By working together, we avoid reinventing the wheel, build on existing knowledge, and create space for innovative solutions to emerge.
